This monitoring station is placed in the Etna Park that extends from the summit of the volcano to the towns surrounding it. Beautiful not only for its eruptions and for its lava flows, but also for the unique environment surrounding it, rich in sounds, perfumes, and colors. An enchanting landscape protected by a park you cannot miss the opportunity to visit if you are in Sicily.
As part of the ERO Etna Radio Observatory project, there is a fully experimental activity using microcontroller technology, smart accelerometers, and projects created in schools or pioneered. The LSE or Etna Experimental Laboratory collects all these projects for educational use, within the Paolo Lanza station at Parsifal Park in Nicolosi. The station was built in 2022 and opened in 2023 through a collaboration between ERO, STMicroelectronics, INGV Osservatorio Etneo di Catania and Etna Park.
A new experience with ST sensors and development boards. This time it was the turn of LoRa technology that allows the remote transmission of small information. Together with the INGV of Catania and the University of Catania, and thanks to the willingness and collaboration of the Director of the Integral Nature Reserve "Complesso Immacolatelle e Micio Conti," in San Gregorio, I installed a solar-powered system to detect environmental parameters and vibrations inside a lava flow cave, where colonies of bats have been observed over time. The idea is to track over time the climate trends inside the cave, at various points including the outer mouth, and any ground movements, and have them online in real time. Coupled with the ASTRA-1B and STM32 Nucleo pack LoRa™ HF band sensor and gateway kits, there is an ultrasound recorder, calibrated for bat transmission frequencies. The process is minimally invasive and does not require human presence inside the cavity. Data collection will take place for the biennium 2024-2025. I am very happy about this! Rosario Catania
Founder of the Osservatorio Astronomico Amatoriale Etneo (Etna Amateur Astronomical Observatory), a reference point on Etna for the dissemination of astronomical passion. It is based at Parsifal Park in Nicolosi, a theme park in a wonderful natural woodland setting typical of Etna, inside a pagghiaru built using modern bio-architecture techniques. Activities are held with schools and public during important astronomical events. Head office in Nicolosi.
CEPES (Comitato Etneo Promozione Eventi Sportivi). It is an ambitious project that has at heart the promotion of sport as a lifestyle, as the basis for a healthier and more balanced life, and that will embrace step by step, with passion and transparency, the events that from time to time will see the light in the Sicilian territory. It collaborates with public and private bodies and associations. Head office in Catania. Look us up on Facebook. Acting president and founder.
The Gruppo Astrofili Etnei (Etnean Astronomy Group) was born from the common passion of astronomy friends in the province of Catania. It is based in Nicolosi at Parsifal Park and has as its objective the dissemination of practical astronomy, through optical instruments and didactic objects, It also deals with astronomical photography using modern digital techniques and traditional visual observation.
